Pelsall Methodist Church, Walsall

Flexible Economic and Engineered to Last!

A long time in the pipeline is probably a good way to describe the new heating system at Pelsall Methodist Church, but now some four years after my initial visit I am pleased to report the system is up and running.

I think it is fair to say that Pelsall Methodist Church is not just a church but more a church complex at the centre of the local community. As well as the worship area (pictured) there is a Victorian building attached; this was the original church and school rooms which are now split into a series of small halls and meeting rooms as well as a catering kitchen and games room.

When I first met Andrew Clarke at the church to discuss the heating problems he was concerned not only about the lack of heat from his existing system but also the lack of control over the system and the brief was to design a system that could operate in six separate zones.

As is normal in a church complex of this size, the eventual solution came after several site meetings between Andrew and myself and probably many more between Andrew and his property committee; even then, once we had come up with a suitable scheme it was a case of obtaining funding to match church funds in order for the scheme to progress.

The scheme we designed is a low pressure hot water system with two Potterton wall mounted commercial boilers from the Sirius range. These boilers have a stainless steel heat exchange; they were chosen for their reliability and the fact that they modulate up and down depending on the heating demand, rather than constantly knocking on and off as none modulating boilers do, this feature alone considerably extends the life of the units. The boilers are also fitted with intelligent controls and actually talk to each other to ensure that the load is spread evenly between the two units.

The boilers serve radiators in the worship area as the prime zone, with separate independently controlled zones to the games room, entrance hall, school room and large hall, the latter has been fitted with low surface temperature radiators as it is also used as a crèche.

The whole system is controlled by our own intelligent Churchwarden system giving optimum start to ensure maximum economy as well as flexibility and the system benefits from our five year parts and labour guarantee which underlines our commitment to quality and service.
